Charges have been upgraded from attempted murder to first-degree murder in the shooting death of a Western Carolina University student.Jacob Ray was shot just before midnight on Friday October 6th near Tucks Tap and Grille in Cullowhee. He died on Monday October 9th at Mission Hospital. Ray was a junior at the university. Aja Makalo, 19, who was also a student at WCU and Zavion Southerland, 17, are accused of shooting Ray. Both were arrested in Gastonia by the State Bureau of Investigation. Southerland is being held without bond. Makalo is being held under a $500,000 bond.Search warrants indicate drugs could be a possible motive in the shooting. The killing remains under investigation.
