Car flipped three times Two year old not fastened ejected from car

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppBahamas, June 26th 2017: You have just got to buckle your children up or ensure that they are fastened securely into a car seat, else what happened to a mother on Saturday evening on John F Kennedy Drive could also happen to you.The woman and mother in that Saturday evening collision is in serious condition, but her baby girl is dead.  Police say the child was fully ejected from the Nissan Teana after somehow the mother lost control of the vehicle, and the child, not strapped in by car seat or seat belt was thrown through the front windshield and pronounced dead on the scene.ASP Craig Stubbs, Officer in Charge of the Traffic Division, who said:  “The car flipped over three times. We are still not sure how the accident happened. For some reason, the cars made an impact while travelling in the same direction, which caused the woman’s vehicle to flip over. It crossed the median and ended up on the eastbound lane, unfortunately the child died on the scene. We just want to encourage parents, if you are travelling with kids under the age of five, even if you are going a short distance to have them in a car seat or strapped in the back seat of the car. Failure to do this will result in what we saw on Saturday. So often we see parents driving with kids standing up in the vehicle or playing in the front seat, with no car seat or seat belt, but we are clamping down on these persons.”The male driver of the gray Mazda, suffered no injuries. #MagneticMediaNews Related Items: Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApplast_img read more

Preparing for Change 25 Years Too Late

first_imgNEW YORK—At the Bryant Park Hotel last night, a discussion sponsored by Bluewolf, a technology consulting company (with the generic sounding title “Future of Media: Preparing for Change”) kicked off with a video clip from 1981 about the San Francisco Examiner’s first experiments putting print content online. It’s a bit disconcerting that a few of the same major issues that media companies were grappling with in 1981—like paid content models and the Web putting print employees out of jobs—are plaguing the industry today. During a Q&A session—with media executives from Google to the Buffalo News weighing in—keynoter Clay Shirkey, technologist, professor of interactive telecommunications at New York University and “the provocative voice of all things Internet,” said this: “Media companies keep talking about paid content, and as a result are really just restating the problem.”Shirky believes that the next step in the publishing model is paid content through online subscriptions, something which, he says, has been “unexplored.” He cited magazines like Cook’s Illustrated and Consumer Reports as examples of this success. “The model is easy enough that anyone can implement it by next Thursday…but in order to get readers to pay for online subscriptions, you have to offer something on their behalf, like no advertising.”last_img read more

YouTube to cut down on conspiracy theories in recommendations

first_imgYouTube is making changes to its recommendation system. NurPhoto/Getty YouTube is changing its recommendation system in an attempt to reduce the spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories. On Friday, YouTube said it’ll start reducing recommendations of borderline content, or videos that come close to but don’t “quite cross the line” of violating its Community Standards. For example, the company said this’ll include “videos promoting phony miracle cure for a serious illness, claiming the earth is flat, or making blatantly false claims about historic events like 9/11.”YouTube said the change will impact less than 1 percent of videos on the site. The videos will still be available to watch on YouTube; they just won’t be included in recommendations. “We think this change strikes a balance between maintaining a platform for free speech and living up to our responsibility to users,” the company said in a blog post.In 2018, YouTube’s product chief said more than 70 percent of the time people spent watching videos on the site, they were drawn in by one of its AI-driven recommendations. YouTube said Friday that more than 200 million videos are recommended each day on its homepage alone. The change will initially only affect recommendations in the US and will roll out to more countries over time, YouTube said.Infowars and Silicon Valley: Everything you need to know about the tech industry’s free speech debate.Netpicks: What’s on your favorite video streaming sites around the web.  Comments 3 Tags Share your voice YouTube Digital Medialast_img read more

Alan Turing beats Stephen Hawking Ada Lovelace for spot on UK £50

first_imgBank of England governor Mark Carney reveals the new £50 note, featuring Alan Turing. Getty Images Alan Turing, the UK mathematician whose work paved the way for modern computing and helped break the Nazis’ Enigma Code during World War II, will grace the Bank of England’s new £50 note. Bank of England governor Mark Carney revealed the note, which should go into circulation by the end of 2021, at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester on Monday.”As the father of computer science and artificial intelligence, as well as a war hero, Alan Turing’s contributions were far ranging and path breaking,” Carney said. “Turing is a giant on whose shoulders so many now stand.”His main claim to fame came from his codebreaking work at Bletchley Park, which was brought to the silver screen in 2014’s The Imitation Game. He also questioned whether or not machines could think, kicking off the notion of what we now call AI. Despite this work, he was persecuted for being homosexual and died in 1954 at the age of 41 after eating an apple laced with cyanide. He was pardoned by the Queen in 2014, and legislation pardoning men convicted of now-abolished same-sex criminal offenses was named “Turing’s Law” in his honor. For the spot on the £50 note, Turing was up against Stephen Hawking (who was previously the favorite), Mary Anning, Paul Dirac, Rosalind Franklin, William Herschel and Caroline Herschel, Dorothy Hodgkin, Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage, James Clerk Maxwell, Srinivasa Ramanujan, Ernest Rutherford and Frederick Sanger. In 2012, Google celebrated Turing’s 100th birthday with a terribly clever Doodle.First published at 5:33 a.m. PT.Updated at 6:28 a.m. PT: Adds more detail.last_img read more

Supreme Court directs tobacco companies to immediately follow Govt health warning rules

first_imgIn a big blow to India’s $11-billion tobacco industry, the Supreme Court on Wednesday directed cigarette companies to immediately follow the new government rules of large-size pictorial health warnings.”The tobacco industry should not violate any rule prevailing as of today,” a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court was quoted as saying by Reuters. It further said the Karnataka High Court should hear all the pleas challenging the new rules.A representative group of beedi makers based in South India had approached the Supreme Court on April 8 challenging the new rules. The tobacco companies are up in arms against the government directive issued on April 1 that makes it mandatory for 85 percent of cigarette or tobacco packs to be covered by health warnings.India’s largest cigarette/tobacco manufacturing companies — ITC Ltd, Godfrey Philips and VST Industries — had announced a two-week-long shutdown against the government decision. Even as the companies resumed production of cigarettes and other tobacco products, they refused to abide by the new government regulations and instead challenged the order in various courts across the country. The debate over pictorial warnings heated up when a parliamentary panel backed the tobacco companies and said the government decision was harsh. The Tobacco Institute of India (TII) , a representative body of various tobacco and cigarette manufacturing companies, said the government decision would impact the livelihood of 45.7 million people associated with this industry in India. It also said the regular tax imposition has led to a plunge in production to 95 billion cigarette sticks per year from 110 billion sticks.ITC Chairman Yogesh Deveshwar had last week alleged that the anti-tobacco lobby and a few Indian NGOs urging government to implement the largee size health warnings were acting at the behest of foreign funders from the U.S.The World Health Organisation (WHO), meanwhile, has backed the Indian government and called the current debate in the country worrisome. As per the WHO Global Audit Tobacco Survey, about two in three adults (64.5 percent) in India noticed advertisement or promotion of tobacco products. The survey said three in five current tobacco users in India (61.1 percent) noticed the health warnings on tobacco packaging and one in three tobacco users (31.5 percent) thought of quitting tobacco because of the warning label.last_img read more
