Report: Burnley 2 Everton 1

first_imgBurnley 2 Everton 1: Wood returns to win it for Clarets Jamie Smith Last updated 1 year ago 22:22 3/3/2018 Chris Wood Getty Images Cenk Tosun’s first Premier League goal was in vain as Burnley came from behind to win 2-1 at Turf Moor, substitute Chris Wood heading home. Chris Wood returned from injury with a winning goal, the striker heading in to secure a 2-1 comeback victory for Burnley at home to 10-man Everton on Saturday.Cenk Tosun’s first Premier League goal had put Everton ahead, but the Toffees collapsed to a fifth successive away defeat in the league.Ashley Barnes scored for the second Premier League game in a row to level after the interval, beating the otherwise impressive Jordan Pickford at his near post. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Williams case shows Solskjaer isn’t holding Man Utd’s youngsters back – he’s protecting them Goalkeeper crisis! Walker to the rescue but City sweating on Ederson injury ahead of Liverpool clash Out of his depth! Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp And half-time substitute Wood came up with the winner, ensuring Sean Dyche’s men marked his 250th game in charge with a victory, their first in any competition since December.Wood was featuring for the first time in 2018 and he headed in a Johann Gudmundsson corner to complete the comeback.A disappointing afternoon for Everton worsened late on when centre-back Ashley Williams was sent off for elbowing Barnes, the Wales international now facing a suspension with Sam Allardyce’s men still having work to do to make absolutely sure of safety.1 – This is the first time that Burnley have won a Premier League game after going behind under Sean Dyche (61 games – W1 D12 L48). Character. pic.twitter.com/h8WyIR8YAQ — OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) March 3, 2018 Gudmundsson’s deflected strike was saved by Pickford as the Clarets made a bright start.Everton should have taken the lead after 14 minutes, Theo Walcott blazing over the crossbar after Gylfi Sigurdsson’s sharp cutback found him eight yards out.The deadlock was broken five minutes later though, Tosun opening his Everton account.Walcott’s cross from the right was flicked on by Seamus Coleman – making his 250th Toffees appearance – with Tosun left unmarked eight yards out to beat Nick Pope with a simple header.Pope denied Tosun and then saved from Walcott as Everton cut Burnley open with a rapid break.Chances continued to come with Barnes forcing a fine fingertip save from Pickford, the striker prematurely celebrating after thinking his header from a Matt Lowton cross was in.Dyche sent on Wood at the break, and Burnley then forced two great saves from Pickford. The goalkeeper dived low to his left to turn Aaron Lennon’s drive around the post, before tipping over Ben Mee’s header from the resulting Gudmundsson corner. And Burnley’s pressure eventually told, Barnes equalising after 55 minutes.2 – Ashley Barnes has scored in successive appearances for Burnley in all competitions for the first time since December 2014. Relief. #BUREVE pic.twitter.com/IaUb1dUD4Y — OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) March 3, 2018 Lowton’s superb throughball sent Barnes racing away from former Burnley defender Michael Keane and he confidently beat Pickford at his near post from close range.Pickford denied Barnes a carbon-copy of his goal, Lowton having sent the striker clear again, before Everton substitute Oumar Niasse hit a volley well over the crossbar.Sigurdsson could have snatched all three points for Everton after brilliantly turning James Tarkowski, but the Iceland international lacked composure with his finish and fired wide. And that miss proved pivotal as Wood held off his marker to nod home Gudmundsson’s corner to end a long wait for a Burnley win, with Williams’ late red compounding the misery for Allardyce’s side. Key Opta stats:- Burnley have equalled their best-ever Premier League points tally in a single season (40 – level with 2016-17), with nine games remaining in 2017-18.- Everton have now lost 19 competitive games in 2017-18; their most in a single season since 2005-06 (21).- This is the first time that Burnley have won a Premier League game after going behind under Sean Dyche (61 games – W1 D12 L48).- Ashley Barnes scored in consecutive Premier League games for the first time since December 2014.- Johann Berg Gudmundsson has been directly involved in eight Premier League goals this season (2 goals, 6 assists), three more than any other Burnley player. read morelast_img read more

Allegri: Spurs don’t defend as well as Lazio

first_imgMassimiliano Allegri Allegri: Tottenham don’t defend as well as Lazio Rob Lancaster 08:48 4/3/2018 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(2) Massimiliano Allegri Marco Rosi/Getty Images Juventus Lazio v Juventus Lazio Serie A Paulo Dybala The Juventus boss praised the capital club’s defending and believes his side will have an easier time finding goals against Spurs Massimiliano Allegri knew Juventus would find it tough to break down Lazio but believes they will not have to work quite so hard to score against Tottenham on Wednesday. The Bianconeri left it late at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday, Paulo Dybala marking his first start since overcoming a hamstring problem with a dramatic winner in stoppage time. With leaders Napoli losing at home to Roma, the gap between the top two in Serie A is now down to one point – and the champions have a game in hand over their rivals. Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp However, Juventus must now forget about domestic duties and focus on their Champions League clash with Tottenham at Wembley, with the last-16 tie delicately poised following a 2-2 draw on Italian soil.”It wasn’t an easy game for us,” Allegri told Mediaset Premium after the 1-0 win in Rome.”They are very strong physically, so it certainly wasn’t going to be easy to play at the Olimpico. We had some injuries up front but the players did well.”We wanted to come away from Rome with a positive result and that’s what we got. They defended themselves very well and we knew that it was going to take something special to beat them.”Yes, that special moment came from Paulo. He is a great young player and we are all happy that he scored.”Tottenham are different compared to Lazio, they don’t defend as well. This win certainly helps our confidence as we will have to be good and lucky on Wednesday.””When @PauDybala_JR scored, I __________”#FinoAllaFine #LazioJuve pic.twitter.com/38UqPAZ1Wo— JuventusFC (@juventusfcen) March 3, 2018Veteran defender Andrea Barzagli hopes Dybala’s “amazing” goal is the first of many for the Argentine forward over the closing months of the campaign.”He’s just come back from injury and he’s scored a huge, huge goal that has won us three massive points tonight,” Barzagli told Juventus’ official website. “I think it will spur him on for the rest of the season now. “Paulo is one of those rare players capable of trying something really difficult in the 92nd minute and pulling it off. His goal was just amazing.”last_img read more

‘I don’t care what people say’ – Mourinho

first_imgManchester United ‘I don’t care what people say’ – ‘Tired’ Mourinho believes Man Utd deserved to beat Liverpool Chris Burton Last updated 1 year ago 23:23 10/3/2018 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(1) Jose Mourinho Getty Manchester United José Mourinho Manchester United v Liverpool Liverpool Premier League The Red Devils boss believes his side were always in control during a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Liverpool, regardless of what others may think Jose Mourinho is too tired to listen to Manchester United’s detractors and does not care if anybody doubts his side were deserving of a 2-1 win over Liverpool. The Red Devils entered a heavyweight encounter against arch-rivals knowing that their second-place standing in the Premier League table was under threat.A Marcus Rashford double, however, moved them five points clear of the chasing pack and strengthened their position behind Manchester City. Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp An own goal from Eric Bailly provided the only blot on United’s copybook against Liverpool, with Mourinho – who has faced plenty of criticism for adopting a defensive mindset this season – of the opinion that his side were always in control of the game and worthy winners. He told Sky Sports: “We can split the halves – United first half and Liverpool second but in my opinion our first half was a half with goals and danger.”In the second half – in my opinion, and probably the people in the studio have a different opinion – was Liverpool controlling with the ball and United controlling without the ball.”Our team was always in control. Even in set-pieces, corners, dangerous situations we were in control so I think we deserved it.”Against Liverpool if you play bad when you have the ball you can be in trouble. In the second half it was not our intention – I cannot say this was the plan. Liverpool pushed us into a defensive situation but we kept control. It was a complete performance by us with two different halves.”If people don’t think we deserved it, I don’t care.”I am a bit tired, we have a match on Tuesday. I don’t care what people say. The boys are happy, I’m happy.”United cannot revel in victory over Liverpool for long as their next outing is just as important. They will be back in Champions League action in midweek, with Sevilla due at Old Trafford for the second leg of a last-16 encounter. That contest is currently locked at 0-0, so Mourinho will need to encourage another impressive performance from his players if they are to prolong their European adventure.last_img read more
