LONDON — With Britain “significantly fatter” than other nations, the government will look at interventions to stem obesity, Boris Johnson said Monday. In his third live broadcast interview of 2020, the prime minister told Times Radio he was rethinking his “libertarian stance” on public health after his fight with coronavirus left him in intensive care.Johnson is said to have attributed his tough battle with the disease to his weight, which topped 110 kilos (17 stone and 7 pounds) when he went into hospital. He has woken up to the idea that the government must help Brits lose weight. He said options for intervention will be looked at closely. “I have taken a very libertarian stance,” he said. “But when you compare us to other countries, we are significantly fatter — apart from the Maltese, for some reason.”Turning to the British economy post-coronavirus, Johnson said it was “the moment for a Rooseveltian approach” in the U.K. — in reference to the U.S. “New Deal” of the 1930s, which saw massive public investment in building and reform.”You can’t at this moment go back to austerity. That would be a mistake”— Boris Johnson, British prime minister“You can’t at this moment go back to austerity. That would be a mistake,” he said. The PM also admitted the pandemic had been a “disaster” and an “absolute nightmare” for Britain, which currently has a third-highest coronavirus death toll in the world. Johnson will set out further plans for planning policy and infrastructure in a speech in Dudley on Tuesday. This comes after government announced a £1 billion schools building program overnight. Elsewhere, Johnson heaped praise on outgoing civil service boss Mark Sedwill, after it was confirmed on Sunday that the U.K.’s under-fire top civil servant is stepping down. The resignation follows months of reports of tension between Sedwill and Johnson’s top team and is part of a wider shakeup of how the British state functions. The PM also praised his controversial top aide Dominic Cummings as “outstanding,” despite his being accused of breaking lockdown rules at the height of the pandemic.Opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer argued changing civil service chief was the wrong priority. “Focus on the economic crisis, start preparing a budget,” he told the Today program on BBC Radio 4.On the economic renewal plan, Starmer argued building more would be “not enough on its own” and warned there could be an imminent crisis in jobs with “the real prospect of millions of people unemployed.””It’s staggering that in light of the economic crisis that is about to descend upon us that we’re not having a July budget that puts jobs absolutely at the center of the economic recovery,” he said. Cholera outbreak in Iraq spreads as cases increase in TanzaniaMore than 500 new cholera cases have been reported in Iraq since last week, and the outbreak has spread to the northern region of Iraqi Kurdistan, according to a Middle East Online update yesterday.Iraqi health officials reported 546 new cases, bringing the outbreak total to 1,809 since the first detections last month. The Baghdad and Babil governorates, which lie along the banks of the Euphrates River, have each seen more than 500 cases. The Kurdish Health Ministry reported four cases of cholera in Arbil and Dohuk provinces, located in the northern autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan. Two cases in Kurdistan occurred in people displaced from central Iraq by conflict.Six deaths due to cholera in Iraq have occurred since the outbreak began; four deaths were reported in the Abu Ghraib region before a national response effort was implemented. Iraqi health officials attribute the outbreak to poor water quality caused by the low level of the Euphrates.Oct 20 Middle East Online articleOct 12 CIDRAP News scan on outbreakIn related news, the World Health Organization (WHO) today announced an array of interventions to halt a cholera outbreak in Tanzania. As of Oct 19, 4,835 cholera cases have been reported in the country. Thirteen regions are affected, though cases are highest (3,460, or 72%) in the large urban region of Dar es Salaam. The WHO and Tanzanian officials today announced the formation of a national task force that would primarily address water sanitation and education, while collaborating with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to increase regional surveillance. The WHO is also creating five cholera treatment centers in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro and deploying two public health experts to integrate surveillance, case management, and sanitation activities across the country. At this time, the agency does not recommend travel or trade restrictions to Tanzania.Oct 21 WHO update Study: Drug-resistant malarial parasites able to infect African mosquitoesArtemisinin-resistant forms of the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, which causes malaria, are able to infect Anopheles coluzzii, which is the main transmitter of malaria in Africa, according to a study yesterday in Nature Communications.Investigators from the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) infected five species of Anopheles mosquitoes, including A coluzzii, with three parasites sensitive to artemisinin (ART) and six ART-resistant parasites that have been well-established in western Cambodia. All nine forms of P falciparum infected the 216 mosquitoes, and the ART-resistant parasite was present in the salivary glands of 153 mosquitoes (71%), including A coluzzii. The ART-resistant parasites demonstrated genetic similarities that may explain why they are able to infect diverse mosquito species by bypassing the mosquitoes’ immune systems, NIAID investigators said in an agency news release.ART-combination therapies are the frontline treatment for malaria in Africa, and investigators expressed concern that the spread of ART-resistant P falciparum to A coluzzii could lead to malarial treatment failure and increased disease transmission on the continent. Investigators estimate that malaria will cause about 400,000 deaths in Africa this year, with more people at risk if drug-resistant parasites spread from Southeast Asia to Africa.Oct 20 Nat Commun study Oct 20 NIAID news release UN-backed polio vaccination campaign begins in UkraineUkraine, which is experiencing the first polio outbreak in the European region since 2010, today launched a nationwide vaccination campaign whose first phase is aimed at 2.85 million children aged 6 and under, the WHO said today. The agency recently expressed concern over a weeks-long delay to begin the campaign. Two more campaigns, to follow at 1-month intervals, will target 4.75 million children younger than 10 years, the WHO said. All vaccinations are being given free of charge via funding garnered by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) from the Canadian government. The polio outbreak was first announced Sep 1 when paralysis in two children from southwestern Ukraine, 10 months and 4 years of age, was attributed to the disease. No additional cases of paralysis have been identified, says the WHO, but since paralysis occurs in only about 1 in 200 cases, many infections may be going unnoticed. Millions of children are at acute risk, the agency said, because of low polio vaccine coverage in the country. The WHO and UNICEF are supporting Ukraine’s health ministry in planning the vaccination campaigns, strengthening surveillance, and training health workers. An assessment of risk in Ukraine and surrounding areas as well as of potential routes of transmission is also being conducted by WHO.International guidelines say that even one case of polio constitutes an outbreak and warrants urgent response.Oct 21 WHO notice Oct 12 CIDRAP News scan on outbreak
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada’s (TSB) investigation into the grounding of the passenger vessel Louis Jolliet has highlighted the need for comprehensive emergency procedures, training and drills, according to its investigation report. On May 16, 2013, the passenger vessel Louis Jolliet ran aground off Sainte-Pétronille, Île d’Orléans, Quebec, while on a cruise with 57 passengers on board. The passengers and some crew were evacuated, the vessel sustained minor damage, and was re-floated at high tide. There were no injuries or pollution reported. The investigation found that, although present on the bridge at the time of the grounding, the master was not participating in, nor supervising the navigation of the vessel, leaving navigation to the recently-hired chief mate, who initiated a course alteration, and went aground. In examining the events following the grounding, the investigation determined that key crew members were not familiar with their emergency duties. The investigation also determined that the emergency procedures in place for the vessel had shortcomings with respect to passenger safety management, and crew members had not practised such procedures in a realistic way.Although the task of securing the safety of the passengers was accomplished on the day of the occurrence, the Louis Jolliet may carry up to 1000 passengers, highlighting the need for comprehensive and detailed procedures, training, and drills in passenger safety management. The investigation also highlighted the need for effective oversight of passenger safety by Transport Canada (TC).Since the occurrence, Croisières AML, the owner/operator of the vessel, has implemented many safety actions addressing the issues outlined by the TSB investigation including new procedures to familiarize the crew with the route and new training and drills related to passenger safety.TC subsequently issued a notice to their inspectors on their requirements under the current regulations and made improvements to their reporting system.[mappress]Press Release, October 03, 2014

It happened at the Confederations Cup in 2013; it happened one year ago at the World Cup in Brazil; and history is now repeating itself at the Copa America in Chile. The five-time champions of the world have been reduced to one crack: Neymar. There can be no doubts over Neymar’s evolution. This year he has exploded in a front three with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, creating one of the best attacking tridents in the history of football. The Mohicano continues to take massive steps forward, winning the respect of Barcelona fans and of some of Europe’s biggest teams, who are aware that he can change a game at any moment. Upd. on 22/11/2016 at 03:06 CET Neymar’s improvement and star quality contrasts with the difficulties of the Brazilian national team. The environment around the side is rare. Memories of the 1-7 defeat to Germany in the World Cup semi-final weigh heavy. With Dunga, Brazil have won all 10 friendlies this season, though, with notable victories against Argentina and France. NEY’S SOLITUDE Joaquim Piera Given the lack of options in his team, it’s natural that Dunga celebrates the growth of Brazil’s franchise player this summer. The coach hopes that the Neymar that won the treble with Barcelona, who made crucial differences in key Champions League games, will continue to shine, now dressed in yellow and green. Neymar, who has been on the scene since he was a teenager at Santos, now wears Pele’s No.10 shirt and is the captain of Brazil. But it does not intimidate him. Naturally, he takes on the role and he is ready to take charge of his country. NEYMAR’S QUALITY La Canarinha, who have always been a constellation of stars are now reduced to a lone star. Brazil is still a football kingdom, but not as it once was. Brazil is a victim of the gap between the generation of Ronaldinho, Kaka and Adriano, who are now out of combat, and Ney, who turned 23 this year. 14/06/2015 This is the scenario with which they go into their debut match in this year’s Copa against Peru. Brazil will present a pragmatic team, with only Neymar offering the magic. The absence of Chelsea’s Oscar for the tournament has upset the team’s tactics. And even though Liverpool’s Coutinho has done well in friendlies, Dunga prefers the power of Shakhtar’s Fred. The results are indisputable, but there may be a hint of a cheat in there. On Wednesday, in their last friendly before travelling to Chile, Brazil played Hondura in front of 23,000 fans in Porto Alegre, the home of Dunga. Neymar had played in the Champions League final three days before and was unable to start, with Brazil receiving a frosty reception despite winning the match. The trauma of the 1-7 will take years to overcome, although Dunga hopes success at the Copa America will help to turn the page.
