SA to BRICS: join our infrastructure drive

first_img29 March 2012 President Jacob Zuma has invited business representatives of the BRICS countries to explore the investment opportunities created by South Africa’s new infrastructure development projects. Addressing a BRICS business breakfast ahead of the meeting of BRICS leaders in New Delhi, India on Thursday, Zuma said the South African government had singled out infrastructure as the key driver of new growth and development on the African continent.Foundation for 20 years’ growth Zuma announced the country’s infrastructure plan – which lays the foundation for 20 or more years of growth, improved service delivery and job creation – during his State of the Nation address in February. The government has already set aside in excess of R860-billion for infrastructure development by March 2014. Zuma told the business representatives that the infrastructure drive was about providing housing, sanitation, public transport and running water for millions of South Africans. “It is about connecting rural communities to economic opportunities through building dams and irrigation systems, connecting farms and villages to the energy grid and building schools and clinics. Our view is that cities should not be the only places with lights, roads or tap water.” Focus would also be placed on education and skills development, with a skills plan running in tandem with each major project. Work was being done with the country’s universities and colleges to speed up the production of the critical skills needed for the infrastructure projects, Zuma added.‘New types of developmental agreements’ “I invite you, as the business community of BRICS, to collaborate with us to explore these infrastructure opportunities,” Zuma said. “We are convinced that we can negotiate new types of mutually beneficial developmental agreements with BRICS countries on infrastructure development.” Zuma also expressed optimism about a proposed BRICS-led South-South Development Bank, which would be funded and managed by the BRICS and other developing countries, and could act as a counterweight to other multilateral lenders, such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. The leaders of the five BRICS countries on Thursday directed their finance ministers to examine the proposal to create such a bank and to report back to them at the next summit in South Africa in 2013. “The bank will reinforce the BRICS grouping by utilising surplus reserves,” Zuma said. “It will also encourage investment in a more sustainable and productive manner for the financing of infrastructure.” SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Cathay Pacific to serve US capital with A350-1000s

first_imgUnited States Capitol and the Senate Building, Washington DC . Image: Cathay Pacific Cathay Pacific will use the Airbus A350-1000  to connect Hong Kong to Washington, DC, for the first time in 2018 with a four-times weekly direct flight. The service to Dulles International Airport will be the longest in the Cathay network at 7,085 nautical miles (8,153 miles or 13,122kms) and is part of a strategy by the Hong Kong carrier to expand its nonstop routes using next generation aircraft. The fuel efficient aircraft allow it to open up routes it would not otherwise have considered. The airline is also spruiking 2018 as one of its most significant years in terms of expansion.Other services to be launched next year include year-round services to Irish capital Dublin in March and to  European political center Brussels in June.A seasonal service to Copenhagen in Denmark begins in May and frequencies on popular routes such as Barcelona, Spain, and Tel Aviv, Israel, will be increased in 2018.The new Washington route will complement existing routes to the East Coast, including Boston and New York’s two main international airports – John F Kennedy and Newark Liberty.Cathay is fighting increased competition in its home market and announced in August a first-half loss of $HK2 billion ($US262m), compared to a net profit of $HK353 million in the first half of 2016.  It predicted at the time the second half would likely be just as bad.The new route also comes as US carriers have strengthened their ties with mainland Chinese carriers determined to increase their presence in the North American market.American Airlines in March announced a $US200million equity investment in Guangzhou-based China Southern  that brought together two largely complementary networks and gave American a foothold in burgeoning Chinese market.Delta Air Lines a 3.55 per cent stake in Shanghai’s China Eastern and is poised to help the Chinese carrier set up operations at Beijing’s giant second airport, Daxing, when it opens in 2019.Cathay Pacific chief executive Rupert Hogg said that the new service has been introduced to cater to the growing demand for travel to the Washington region while giving   US-based passengers with more convenient access to Asia and beyond through its Hong Kong hub.“Our customers have told us they want greater options and increased flexibility – and we’ve listened,” Hogg said in the announcement. “Much like Hong Kong, Washington DC is a vibrant and dynamic destination and we are thrilled to soon be providing the only direct flights between these two great cities.“Establishing new direct air links to destinations that aren’t already served from Hong Kong enhances our city’s status as Asia’s largest international hub and allows us to secure new and important sources of revenue.’’The A350-1000 is the bigger sister of the A350-900 already operated by Cathay. It has less range than the -900 but offers good operational economics in terms of costs per seat-mile.It will feature a three-class cabin with business, premium economy and economy classes.READ: Cathay Pacific’s new A350 a winner for passengers.Cathay has 45 A350s on order and until recently had planned to take 26 of those as -1000s. In September, however, it converted six of the -1000 orders back to the smaller  -900s.last_img read more

Mobile Firefox Comes to Android (Sort of)

first_imgFennec: Slow to Launch? We first heard of Mozilla’s plans to bring Fennec to Android back in June of last year when Google announced a change in how software can run on Android. After the release of a new Android NDK that used C/C++ programming languages – the same as Firefox – Mozilla began to consider the possibilities of bringing the Fennec browser to the Google-branded mobile platform. In October, Mozilla CEO John Lilly re-confirmed the organization’s plans to build an Android version, while touting its many features like support for “Javascript, CSS, Flash, SVG, video and audio.” It would be “the first mobile browser to support add-ons,” he said. Now it’s nearly 9 months later and there’s still not a usable version of the browser for Android devices – just pre-alpha builds like this. Should we be concerned? Should Mozilla? While waiting for a real version of Fennec, the popularity of Webkit-based browsers continues to grow, Opera gains mobile ground (especially on feature phones), and last month, Microsoft announced a new mobile OS launching by year-end, Windows Phone 7 Series. This OS will include an updated version of Internet Explorer Mobile that offers multi-touch gesture support and tabbed browsing, among other features. Mozilla is expected to release a working build of Fennec around the same time, but depending on the exact launch dates, they may not get to claim “first” anymore – at least among the top web browsers out there. (Third-party apps already deliver tabbed browsing on various mobile devices). That being said, support for Mozilla is still strong. And once functional, it may have a lot more to offer than its competitors. In the meantime, intrepid Android geeks will be definitely be interested in giving this new fan-compiled Fennec build a look. However, general Android users should probably stay away for now – this version is by no means meant for daily use. Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … sarah perez Fennec, the mobile version of the Firefox web browser, is now available in an early build designed for Android handsets thanks to a fan-compiled download posted on an Android developers forum. And by early, we mean unofficial, pre-alpha, device-specific and downright buggy. But for anyone interested in mobile browser developments, this port is an interesting sneak peek into the future of Firefox’s mobile plans.Fennec for DroidGerman developer Martin Schirr’s version of Fennec is ideal for Droid users because it requires a hardware-based keyboard. Without support for touch input or multi-touch, it won’t work on all flavors of the Google Android mobile operating system. It’s also a hefty download – 41 MB in size. And it freezes upon first boot. Plus, it’s slow and prone to crashes and bugs. But that’s what pre-alpha means – especially a pre-alpha that wasn’t released by the Mozilla organization itself. So what can you do with the Android version of Fennec? Well, you can test out its features, like tabbed browsing, tab synchronization between desktop and mobile and browser add-ons. Right now, there aren’t too many add-ons available, but given the stage of development, that’s not surprising. Wikileaks Moves to Amazon Web Services

first_imgTags:#cloud#security Related Posts klint finley A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic…center_img Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Yesterday we reported that Wikileaks‘ web site suffered a denial of service (DOS) attack just before the publication of its most recent cache of documents. The site was down for only a few hours, according to Forbes’ Andy Greenberg.Today, The Guardian reports that Wikileaks turned to Amazon.com’s Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2) service to get back online and survive the DOS attack. There are various ways to conduct a DOS attack, but most methods work by placing an enormous burden on a server. For example, one might make a huge number of frivolous requests for pages of a web site until the server is overloaded. Wikileaks originally claimed it was receiving a distributed DOS attack. A self-described “hacktivist” using the name th3j35t3r took credit for the attack, and claims it was not a distributed DOS attack. The Guardian says that the EC2 pricing model makes the service less vulnerable to DOS attacks. However, last year a DDOS attack brought down the EC2 hosted site Bitbucket. That incident led to some to caution against using cloud hosting for mission critical services. However, it could be that EC2 has improved its defenses against DOS attacks. A highly scalable infrastructure would certainly help, as would hosting content on multiple providers.Update: George Reese of the cloud security company Enstratus tells us that the attack on BitBucket was very different from the attack on Wikileaks. The BitBucket attack was targeted a vulnerability specific to EC2 that Amazon.com claims to have fixed. The WikiLeaks attack was a generic DOS attack from outside the network. The BitBucket attack actually targeted internal IO resources.According to the Guardian, not all of Amazon.com’s servers are hosted in the US and “it could cause a major incident if the US government were to take action against a company on the basis that it might be hosting material the government finds embarrassing.” It may be unlikely that the US government would take action against Amazon.com, but it is possible that Amazon.com would decide to remove Wikileaks on its own. However, the latest cache of documents are not hosted on the same servers as the rest of the Wikileaks site. cablegate.wikileaks.org is hosted by a French company called Octopuce. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

What It’s Like for an App in Apple & Google’s Crosshairs

first_imgWhat Does UpNext Maps Do Differently? For the user, UpNext Maps just feels nicer than the built-in map. Everything happens faster. It snaps into position smartly, so it’s impossible to lose your place, and it’s easy to tilt back and forth between 2D and 3D views. The 3D buildings – only available in some cities – took some time to load in my tests, but that didn’t take away from exploring the maps themselves or slow the process down.UpNext focuses on what the user is doing. It shifts the colors and emphasis of the map based on what you’re searching for. If you’re looking for Italian restaurants, those glow, and the rest of the map fades out. If you tap a subway station, it animates actual trains and displays estimated arrival times. While the dominant map systems concentrate on roads, UpNext shifts to emphasize whatever information the user needs.UpNext Maps for Android is coming soon. For iPhone users, UpNext ties in with VZ Navigator for turn-by-turn directions powered by Verizon. That service costs $4.99 per month, and Android users have turn-by-turn built into their phones. But until Apple offers its own turn-by-turn features, this combination with UpNext definitely outdoes the iPhone’s stock navigation options. The key difference between built-in maps and UpNext is the toggle between “immerse” and “explore” modes. It’s not just a navigation tool like Google Maps, nor is it just a world-exploring tool like Google Earth. It’s just enough of both at once, and it performs better. The app is not perfect. It doesn’t yet include much of the Earth, for one thing, but the U.S. is there. It has a pretty hard time finding places by search, whereas Google Maps figures out what you’re looking for almost every time. But as a way of browsing a map, UpNext has no peers. It tilts seamlessly from 2D to 3D, and you can turn the place-browsing layer on and off as needed. But the most amazing part is the performance. It loads so fast and scrolls so smoothly that Apple and Google look like novices in comparison. Bootstrapped MapsUpNext does have considerable experience behind it. Three of its four co-founders have experience building 3D graphics for games. Its founders have been working on maps since 2004 – before Google Maps launched – and formally founded UpNext in 2007. For four years, they forged ahead as a bootstrapped company until Chris Sacca came aboard as an angel investor a little more than a year ago.Was that a crazy investment?By now, Google seems to have maps well under control for the entire world, and Apple is known to be building its own maps, which will have to be even better than Google’s. Among Apple’s mapping acquisitions was C3 Technologies, which built eye-popping 3D maps that are sure to dazzle users of existing immersive maps, including UpNext. What keeps UpNext working on maps despite the risk of getting stepped on by one (or both) of the mobile platform titans?A Dearth of InnovationIt was only a year after these four founders started making maps that Google released Google Maps. “Our fledgling project was already on the ropes,” Advani says. Google began to dominate, and investors began to run from mapping apps. All the VC money and press attention ran to social applications. “If you were working on ‘raw tech,’ you’d have a very difficult time raising money in this period,” says Advani.Consequently, UpNext found itself with very little competition from startups. Apps that needed location would just build on the Google Maps API. Google Maps became “safe,” as Advani says. With all the attention on Google, UpNext kept building quietly.“At some point,” says Advani, “after several near-death experiences, we became inured to this fear of being steamrolled. We began to believe that while Google could evolve, they just couldn’t be radical. That’s what’s kept us going.”Google hasn’t stopped innovating on maps. Street View is a different kind of immersive experience than 3D. It’s a snapshot of the real place frozen in time but with photographic realism. Additionally, it has begun to push vector-mapping and indoor maps into the Android version and add more Google Earth integration for 3D experiences. But it has also started sewing up the business aspects of maps. That wonderful API upon which developers depended now costs money to use.Maps is becoming a core business for Google, and that may be hurting its ubiquity and user experience. UpNext should be overjoyed about that. But there’s one problem, and it’s a little company called Apple, Inc.Screenshot of C3 Technologies street view (via MacRumors) Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… jon mitchell Apple Maps: The Looming ShadowWe can pretty much bet on Apple revealing its new, Google-free maps at WWDC next month as part of iOS 6. Siri already asks Yelp for restaurants instead of Google, and now it will be able to give its own directions. And the 3D imagery acquired in the C3 Technologies deal will probably allow iOS users to forget about Google Street View. Where will that leave UpNext?“We think C3 is the wrong direction,” Advani says. “It’s essentially an improved satellite view – satellite with a third dimension. We believe maps are about more than maximizing realism; they’re meant to be immersive and evocative.“Think of an amusement park map: You look at it, and with just a glance, you get a feel for the different areas. Realism is not what we’re after. What we want to do is bring that old-school sense of wonder back to maps.”Next month’s news will escalate the platform battle between Google and Apple over mapping, which is a crucial mobile feature. But UpNext is finding more investor interest than ever before. With Apple and Google so concerned with the business of mapping, UpNext has a chance to deliver a better experience.Clarification 5/25 7:48 AM: The post was updated to clarify that Google Maps for Android has also moved to a vector-based map. Related Posts center_img UpNext Maps for iPhone is beautiful. It’s the smoothest, fastest map I’ve ever used. It renders 3D buildings for virtual exploration of certain cities. Its look and functionality are distinctive. It’s free. And both Google and Apple want to build these features themselves. Is this a kamikaze mission for UpNext?“We’ve been hobbyists in maps since 2004,” says UpNext co-founder Raj Advani. “At the time, I was fond of coding video games, and the gulf in interactivity between the video game experience and the digital mapping experience was striking. A video game world is animated, alive, interactive; things can change. There are weather patterns, sunsets, noise and immersion. In the digital mapping world back then, there were just roads – and ugly, static roads at that.”UpNext’s goal from the outset was to write a vector-based mapping engine. Traditional mapping systems, including Google, Bing and OpenStreetMap, are tile-based. They download whole pieces of the map as you need them. UpNext works more like a 3D gaming engine; it’s downloading raw data and then rendering the maps itself.“The difference is key,” Advani says, “because being able to decide, in real time, how data is rendered is what makes vector maps so compelling. It enables a map to change in response to the actions and the environment of the user.”The idea was ahead of its time in 2004, but now there are smart, fast mobile devices with lots of native computing power. Google Maps 5.0 for Android got vector-based maps in 2010, with similar tilting and 3D buildings, but UpNext Maps for iPhone has now gone further than that. It uses the dynamic nature of vector-based maps to adapt the map to the user’s wishes. Bad news for those wishing to dance or sing their way to DU

first_imgDelhi University aspirants hoping to make it to a college of their choice through the extra-curricular activity (ECA) quota have been hung out to dry, it seems. After sports quota, now trials for this category have run into rough weather as colleges do not have adequate manpower (teachers) to judge applicants. Consequently, many institutions have been forced to postpone their ECA trials indefinitely.By Tuesday, sought-after colleges such as Miranda House, Kirori Mal College (KMC), Ramjas College and Hindu College had put up notices informing applicants of this decision. While Ramjas and Miranda House were to start their preliminary rounds from Tuesday, Hindu and KMC had trial dates scheduled in the last week of June and first week of July, respectively. And other institutions may soon join this list.Zakir Husain College (day) and Gargi College, for instance, are yet to take a call on whether to postpone ECA trials or not.Though the ECA quota is not mandatory for colleges, most admit students through this category as it helps them form strong teams for debating, dance and quizzing, among other activities. This latest snag in the admission process is just another effect of the ongoing teachers’ agitation at DU. Unhappy with the “autocratic” manner in which the semester system was introduced by Vice- chancellor Deepak Pental in the science departments at the undergraduate level, teachers – in response to the appeal by the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) – of as many as 50 colleges have decided to not participate in the admission process this year.advertisementThough on Monday the Delhi High Court had restrained teachers from “obstructing” the ongoing admission process “in any manner whatsoever”, this may not be of much help to the college principals as DUTA has decided to continue with its agitation.”We respect the court’s judgment, but we will continue to appeal to teachers to disassociate themselves from admissions as this does not amount to obstruction. Our agitation is peaceful and it’s our way of telling the vice- chancellor that the teachers will not be party to his autocratic ways,” said Aditya Narayan Misra, president, DUTA. Though college principals had managed to declare the first cutoff list in time without help from teachers, they have taken the call to not bear the onus for the ECA trials.”There’s only so much work one person can do. It’s impossible to conduct trials without the teachers. So I have decided to postpone it till the issue between the university and the teachers is resolved,” said Rajendra Prasad, principal, Ramjas College.”Our preliminary rounds were to begin today, but I have put them on hold till further notice as I want my teachers to be a part of this process. I will meet my faculty members regarding this and take a call soon,” said Pratibha Jolly, principal, Miranda House.Students who had their hopes pinned on the ECA quota are obviously not happy with the latest turn of events. “Students who want to appear for (ECA) trials are required to apply to colleges separately and not through the common admission form. I have applied to KMC and Hindu. Had I known that the chances of ECA trials are slim I would have filled up the common form only,” said Radhika Ghosh, an applicant. However, some institutions such as Kamla Nehru College and SGTB Khalsa College will keep their trials on course by having it judged just by an external jury.SPORTS TRIALS ONDELHI University started its five- daylong centralised sports trials on Tuesday.Despite an agitation by teachers across colleges against the introduction of common trials from this year, the university managed to wrap up trials on the first day without any problems. The sports council conducted the trials with the help of an external jury across five venues for volleyball, shooting, softball, football and wrestling. DU has registered close to 2,500 candidates across 45 colleges for common trials, which end on June 27.last_img read more
